Holiday Apartment Umbria - Directions

 <<back to location

The medieval village of Castel Rigone is 500 metres above the north-east side of Lake Trasimeno. The lake is at the centre of Italy in Umbria “the green heart of Italy” and close to the Tuscan border. Rome is two hours to the south, Florence is an hour and a half north, Sienna is one hour west and Perugia is fifteen minutes to the east. The apartment in Via dei Tralci (pronounced 'veeya day tralchee') enjoys superb south-west facing panoramic views across the lake and surrounding countryside, a sun trap with a cooling breeze. On a clear day it is possible to see the hills that surround Assisi forty kilometres away.

You can arrange to either meet our caretakers Tina and Anna at the apartment or just off the dual carriageway at Magione so that they can show you the way.

By car:

From the North-West take the A1 motorway (Autostrada del Sole) and exit at Valdichiana (at the local town of Bettolle) onto the Bettolle-Perugia raccordo (dual carriageway) and head east to Perugia. There is no direct connection from the A1, you will need to first exit via the pay toll and then follow the signs for Perugia along minor roads for half a kilometre until you come onto this dual carriage-way.

Exit at Passignano sul Trasimeno Est (east), this is the second exit signed for Passignano.  Follow the signs for Castel Rigone.  First of all this takes you left onto a road running parallel to the raccordo and railway line.  Continue until you see the left hand turn signposted to Castel Rigone.  This takes you up a steep hill with lots of hair-pin bends and eventually you will reach the village.

100 yards after you come into the village there is a bar on the left (Caffé di Teatro) and a small parking area on the right (Bellvedere, viewpoint), take the right hand turn opposite the bar, down the hill (via IV novembre), past a children’s playground on the right.  You will go around two steep S-bends and on the corner of the next S bend to the right (just past a large modern apartment building on the left) is Via dei Tralci.  The road is marked by “priva strada” (private road) and dead-end signs and starts off as a tarmac road, leading to a very short ‘white’ road.  (Note the full address will be supplied following a confirmed booking)

From the South take the A1 motorway (Autostrada del Sole) and exit at Orte and follow signs for Terni/Perugia along the Terni-Viterbo raccordo (dual carriageway).  Continue following signs to Perugia tuning off onto the E45-S3bis before you reach Terni.  Continue past Todi following signs to Perugia.  Then take the Perugia-Sienna raccordo towards Sienna.  Take the exit marked for Magione.  Turn right towards the town and go 500 yards to a left hand turn signed to Chiusi. Don’t take this turn but take the immediate right hand turn after this junction, it goes off at an acute angle and you might even spot the small sign for Castel Rigone.  Go a hundred yards up an incline and follow the road round to the right.  This road will take you across farmland and then up the hill through Colpiccione to Castel Rigone, with several hairpin bends.  Immediately after you see the sign for Castel Rigone, take the left hand turn on the hairpin bend turning to the right, marked “priva strada” this is Via dei Tralci.  If you reach the brown welcome to Castel Rigone sign, then you have gone too far!

From the North-East take the A45 until you reach Perugia.  Then as from the south above, take the Perugia-Sienna raccordo towards Sienna and follow directions above.

Essentially there are two roads up to Castel Rigone from the lake, one comes up from Passignano to the west and one comes up from Magione to the east. Via dei Tralci is at the top of the Magione road just as you come into the village.
