Umbria enjoys scenery that is every bit as
breathtaking as that of Tuscany, but softer and more pastoral. Hundreds of
rivers and a handful of lakes irrigate fertile valleys flanked by forested
hillsides and mountains reaching above 2,000 metres/6,500 feet.
Vestiges of the Etruscan and Roman eras are plentiful in the form
of ancient hill towns and spectacular ruined settlements.
Prosperity in the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods gave rise
to the many fortified castles that dominate the region’s skyline, to the
magnificent architecture of Spoleto and Perugia, and to the splendid
basilica at Assisi which celebrates the life of the extraordinary St.
Francis.
Castel
Rigone, was founded by Babaro Arrigo who during the fall of the Huns to
Rome, fell in love with this spot and decided to establish himself here.
The hamlet overlooks the Lake of Trasimeno where in 217 AD the Battle of
Trasimeno took place between the Carthaginians led by Hannibal and the
Romans under the Consul Flaminius in which the Romans suffered a bloody
defeat. more local detail>>
